| The Tragedy of Great Power Politics | P01

May 16, 2026·50:21 min·Episode 36·Full Episodes·The Tragedy of Great Power Politics — John Mearsheimer

The Tragedy of Great Power Politics।

আমরা আলোচনা করেছি Human Nature Realism, Defensive Realism এবং Offensive Realism এর পার্থক্য, anarchy, military capability, uncertainty of intentions, survival, rational state behavior, latent power, actual military power, ground force, stopping power of water, hegemony, relative gain এবং free trade এর limits।

In this episode, we begin John J. Mearsheimer’s classic book The Tragedy of Great Power Politics. After reading books on economics, society, institutions, development, and the future, we now enter one of the most important questions: how does a nation survive in the international system?

We discuss why economy, trade, democracy, and international institutions alone cannot explain world politics. Liberal theory often suggests that trade, globalization, the UN, the WTO, and democracy should reduce war. But the real world, from Russia Ukraine to America China rivalry, Middle East conflicts, protectionism, and military competition, shows something much darker.

According to Mearsheimer’s Offensive Realism, the international system itself pushes great powers to seek more power. There is no global 911, no guaranteed world police, and no final court that can protect every state. So states try to maximize power because survival is never guaranteed.

We explore Human Nature Realism, Defensive Realism, Offensive Realism, anarchy, offensive military capability, uncertainty of intentions, survival, rational state behavior, latent power, actual military power, ground forces, the stopping power of water, hegemony, relative gains, and the limits of free trade.

By the end of this episode, you will understand why democracy does not always mean peace, trade does not always mean friendship, and even smaller countries are often shaped by the brutal logic of great power politics.
