Songs Inspired by the Great Economists

Inspired by What Would the Great Economists Do? by Linda Yueh (2018)

Twelve economists, twelve musical worlds, from a Scottish sea shanty to 1920s jazz that crashes with the market.

The idea

Why this album exists

Linda Yueh's book puts twelve great economists in a room with today's problems and asks what each would do. I gave each of them a sound instead.

Adam Smith gets a sea shanty. Irving Fisher gets 1920s jazz that collapses with the crash. Hayek gets cold, restrained electronics. Joan Robinson gets erhu and sitar for a problem that looks the same in every language. The finale lets all twelve argue at once.

Along the way the album drifted into cinematic world fusion: bansuri, erhu, oud, sitar, tabla, African percussion, Celtic violin. The rule for every track was the same: a chorus you can remember, and economics accurate enough to teach.
