Freedom কি শুধু ব্যক্তিগত choice?
নাকি freedom, justice, responsibility আর collective decision – সব একসাথে ভাবতে হয়?
এই episode-এ আমরা Development as Freedom বইয়ের শেষ অংশ নিয়ে আলোচনা করি। এখানে Amartya Sen freedom-কে শুধু ব্যক্তিগত অধিকার হিসেবে দেখেন না, বরং culture, human rights, social choice, democracy, justice, এবং social commitment-এর সাথে জুড়ে দেখান।
আমরা শুরু করি women’s agency দিয়ে। নারীকে শুধু welfare receiver হিসেবে না দেখে, agent হিসেবে দেখতে হবে – এই Sen-এর বড় দাবি। Education, nutrition, training, employment এবং earning power নারীদের শুধু নিজেদের জীবন বদলাতে সাহায্য করে না, পুরো সমাজকেও বদলায়। এখান থেকেই আসে cooperative conflict-এর ধারণা, যেখানে পরিবার একসাথে থাকে, কিন্তু resources বণ্টনের মধ্যে power imbalance থাকে। আর GDP-based economy এই invisible household contribution-কে properly count করতে পারে না।
এরপর আসে Missing Women। Sen দেখান, gender bias, malnutrition, neglect, selective abortion, unequal care – এসবের কারণে লক্ষ লক্ষ নারী population থেকে “missing” হয়ে যায়। এটা শুধু নারীর সমস্যা না, পুরো society, crime pattern, workforce, health, family structure – সবকিছুর ওপর প্রভাব ফেলে।
তারপর আমরা যাই hunger, population, এবং entitlement-এর আলোচনায়। পৃথিবীতে food production বাড়ছে, তবু hunger থেকে যাচ্ছে। কারণ hunger সবসময় food shortage না, বরং entitlement failure। অর্থাৎ খাবার আছে, কিন্তু access নেই। এই জায়গা থেকেই Sen coercive population control-এর বিরুদ্ধে গিয়ে women’s education, work participation, and social voice-কে best long-term answer হিসেবে দেখান।
Episode-এর বড় অংশ জুড়ে আছে Universal Human Rights। Human rights কি শুধু Western idea? Sen-এর উত্তর হলো না। Rights শুধু আইনগত বিষয় না, ethical claims-ও। Asian values দেখিয়ে democracy বা rights বাতিল করার চেষ্টা intellectually দুর্বল, কারণ Asian history নিজেই pluralism, debate, tolerance, এবং coexistence-এর শক্ত উদাহরণে ভরা।
এরপর আসে social choice theory। Arrow-এর impossibility theorem-এর বিপরীতে Sen বলেন, মানুষকে যদি শুধু selfish rational calculator ধরা হয়, তবে collective choice impossible মনে হবে। কিন্তু মানুষ শুধু self-interest দিয়ে চলে না। Love, sympathy, duty, respect, reciprocity – এগুলোও real human motivations। তাই discussion, education, information, democratic correction – এগুলোর মাধ্যমে society ভালো সিদ্ধান্ত নিতে পারে।
শেষে Sen-এর বড় message দাঁড়ায় এখানে: freedom একাই যথেষ্ট না, justice আর responsibility-ও লাগবে। Individual freedom আর collective commitment একে অপরের বিরুদ্ধে না, বরং একে অপরকে strengthen করতে পারে। আর perfectly just society একদিনে আসবে না – ছোট ছোট অন্যায় চিনে, ঠিক করে, discussion-এর মাধ্যমে, freedom expand করেই আমরা সামনে এগোই।
