Development as Freedom
The Musical
Inspired by Development as Freedom by Amartya Sen (1999)
Amartya Sen's argument that development means freedom, one chapter per song.
The idea
Why this album exists
In 1999 Amartya Sen argued that development is not GDP, factories or tall buildings. It is the expansion of real human freedoms: to live, learn, speak, trade, vote and choose a life worth living.
I read the book for the podcast and could not get it out of my head, so I tried to turn each chapter into a song. Fourteen tracks, one chapter each. Hip-hop sits at the core because call-and-response is the oldest trick for making an idea stick. Around it: a full orchestra, South Asian percussion, flutes, and one ballad for the chapter where the book demands silence.
Not sure it was a great idea. But if even one concept stays with you, the project worked.
